And we walk …

AIDS Walk for Life September 17th, 2011

Saturday, September 17th will mark the 17th annual AIDS Walk for Life held here in Nelson BC.  Stretching back to the Walk’s humble beginnings in 1994 in Nelson with four walkers initially participating, flash forward to this year where we anticipate over 80 people taking part in this event of awareness, tribute and opportunity to raise money to further support those living with this life long and debilitating disease.  This annual event is the single largest fundraiser in support of those living with and/or affected by HIV/AIDS in the Kootenay Boundary and throughout Canada as well.

Here in BC we are privileged to have the BC Centre of Excellence on the cutting edge of research and programs in the global fight against the HIV virus.  Dr. Julio Montaner’s Treatment as Prevention strategy has been widely recognized as the leading initiative towards a goal of aggressively limiting new infections and getting immediate treatment for those that are positive.  Unfortunately, these immediate services are not accessible to our rural communities.  The cost of travel and support to visit HIV specialists in Vancouver can be out of reach for people struggling with poverty, illness and other socio-economic factors.  Therefore, the need to continue to raise money and awareness to help support those in our community that are living with these challenges is upon us.  The monies raised help us help people with travel costs, accommodation, food and health supplement needs.

With this in mind we urge the community of Nelson to come out and support the 2011 Scotiabank AIDS Walk for Life on Saturday, September 17th.  Please call for more information, pledge sheets, and/or support: ANKORS (250) 505-5506.
